TOUR RM05: BAROQUE ROME
An interesting tour to enjoy a pleasant walk and visit some of the most famous attractive sights of Rome.
You will reach Rome downtown area to leave busses and start our walk through the elegant Via Condotti, the
shopping shrine in town - a shadowy narrow street claiming the smartest and most exclusive boutiques and
shops of the city - and its charming “Caffè Greco”, one of the oldest in town, favourite spot of Romantic
artists and poets. Will continue then towards the most celebrated “Piazza di Spagna”, dominated by 16th
century Trinità dei Monti Church and shaped like a bow tie and surrounded by tall shuttered houses painted
in muted shades of ocher, cream and russet; with its curious “Barcaccia” fountain by Bernini, this area - also
known as “Spanish Steps” - has been representing for almost three centuries the chief meeting place for
visitors to Rome and one of the glories of late Baroque Rome.
The name of this location comes from “Palazzo di Spagna”, early 17th century residence of the Spanish Ambassador
to the Holy SeeVatican: right in front of it stands a 19th Century column commemorating the dogma of the Immaculate Virgin.
Walking through the Via Propaganda, will pass by the Church of Sant’ Andrea delle Fratte, a superb work of
Baroque Art, to then continue on to the Via del Tritone leading down to the Rome most famous feat of combined
sculpture and plumbing, the Trevi Fountain, at its most spectacular when floodlit at night.
See this majestic fountain where guests will have the chance to follow the tradition and toss a coin to ensure
their return to Rome; from there, a short walk will take guests to Via del Corso - nearly 1,5 km (1 mile)
in length - it is so called because the Romans used it to race horses, until this became hazardous for pedestrians.
Will keep walking passing by the Pantheon, to finally reach one of the most marvelous squares in the world,
Piazza Navona, the old Domitian Stadium, with its magnificent Fountain of Four Rivers by Bernini.
