TOUR RM04: IMPERIAL ROME
An interesting tour to visit some of the most famous sights of the Roman Empire: you will pass by the Circus Maximus,
the grandest stadium used by Romans for horse-racing contests, the “Palatine Hill”, where according to the legend Romolus
and Remus were raised by a wolf; “Piazza Venezia” dominated by the large memorial to King Victor Emanuel II and the
Mussolini’s Balcony; will start our interesting walk from the Trajan’s Column , the elegant marble column inaugurated
by Trajan in AD 113 and the “Trajan’s Forum”, a sunken area strewn with fractured marble architraves and columns giving
an idea of its original appearance, then on though the majestic Imperial Forums Avenue to reach the “Roman Forum”,
center of ancient Rome’s political and religious life; this incredible and interesting ensemble of ancient ruins
reflects the 12 centuries of history that account for the Roman civilization.
Will walk through the “Via Sacra” (the Sacred Way - the route followed through the Forum by religious and triumphal
processions towards the Capitol) to reach then the Arch of Titus, the imposing triumphal arch erected in 81 A.D. by Emperor
Domitian in honour of the victories of his brother Titus and his father Vespasian in Judea. Finally you will reach one of
the most important monuments of ancient Rome, the Colosseum, symbol of the Eternal City: it was built between 75-80 A.D.
thus it represents the eternity of Roman civilization; this monument is no doubt a masterpiece of classical architecture
with its three superimposed classical orders. This enormous amphitheater was large enough to seat 80.000 spectators at
such Roman events as gladiatoral combats and the martyrdom of Christians.
The last stop on the itinerary will include a visit to the Basilica of St. Peter’s in Chains, where you will admire one
of the many masterpieces by Michelangelo: the famous statue of Moses. The figure of Moses is one of the artist‘s greatest
achievements: the majestic bearded figure is shown holding tablets of the Ten Commandments, and looks as if he may shatter
them at any moment; the sense of power, both physical and spiritual, is overwhelming.
