TOUR CV010: VITERBO THE PAPAL CITY & SURROUNDINGS
A relaxing excursion to enjoy the real flavor of “Tuscia”, the Etruscan land!
Will leave the Civitavecchia dock driving northeast through the countryside to reach after approximately 1 & ˝ hours
the lovely town of Viterbo: Viterbo was an important Etruscan center before falling to the Romans in the 4th century
BC. Its heyday, however, came back in the 13 century when it briefly became the papal seat /1257-1281) During World War
II it was devastated, but the austere gray stone nedieval core, still encircled by walls, and many of the town’s
churches, have been careflly restored.
Will walk around the delightful “San Pellegrino”, the Viterbo’s oldest and best preserved quarter, with its medieval
houses wit towers, arches, and external staircases lining narrow streets running between little piazzas decoarted with
fountains - On Piazza San Lorenzo, which occupies the site of the former Etruscan acropolis, transports one back to the
Middle Ages with a 13th century house on Etruscan foundations (now a chemist’s), its 12th century Duomo boasting an
elegant black and white striped belltower, a solemn 16th century facade and a stark Romanesque interior and its 13th
century Papal Palace (Palazzo dei Papi) with its finely carved loggia and built for popes on their visits to the city.
A delicious lunch in a local restaurant will be then served before resuming our enjoyable excursion towards Tuscania, a
small and charming medieval town which sits on top of a rocky hill and looks over the entire Maremma countryside region.
Tuscania, like Tarquinia, was home to the Etruscan civilisation and still carries this heritage: traces of a village have
been dated back to the 9th century BC. though it was struck by a terrible earthquake in 1971 which destroyed a good part
of the town. Although shaken by this earthquake, its medieval and Renaissance buildings have since been carefully reconstructed,
coming back to their original splendor.
After enjoying all the spectacular sights will return the Civitavecchia Dock.
