TOUR CV09: A TASTE OF TUSCIA
A relaxing excursion to enjoy the real flavor of “Tuscia”, the Etruscan land!
Will leave the Civitavecchia dock driving northeast through the countryside to reach after approximately 1 &1/2 hours
the majestic “Church of the Madonna of the Oak” (Madonna della Quercia), an interesting Renaissance sanctuary built in
memory of the miracle which brought the plague to a halt.
Will then proceed on to the town of Bagnaia were you will visit the beautiful gardens of Villa Lante surrounded by a
rich park of fountains, pavillions and buildings. It represents one of the most interesting Renaissance villas to be
found in central Italy, built in 1578 by Vignola’s project, who inaugurated with it the concept of “Italian gardens.
A delicious lunch in a local restaurant will be then served before resuming our enjoyable excursion towards
Tuscania, a small and charming medieval town which sits on top of a rocky hill and looks over the entire Maremma
countryside region. Tuscania, like Tarquinia, was home to the Etruscan civilisation and still carries this heritage:
traces of a village have been dated back to the 9th century BC. though it was struck by a terrible earthquake in 1971
which destroyed a good part of the town. Although shaken by this earthquake, its medieval and Renaissance buildings
have since been carefully reconstructed, coming back to their original splendor.
After enjoying all the spectacular sights will return the Civitavecchia Dock.
